Finding Joy at Commún: Meet Community Member Laura F.
During the isolation of the pandemic, Laura F. was searching for connection and community. She found all of that and more at Commún. Introduced to the organization by María Rojas, Laura began participating in a wide range of programs and quickly became a familiar, friendly face in the community.
From mental health workshops and English classes to ear acupuncture, nutrition courses, and Zumba, Laura makes the most of what Commún has to offer. Each week, she and her husband also pick up fresh food at the Thursday food share, a resource that helps nourish their household.
But what stands out most to Laura are the monthly community meetings, where neighbors come together not just for information, but for joy and movement. “We do exercises and play fun games with the other community members,” she says. These gatherings are a reminder of the healing power of play.
Laura hopes that Commún will be a place she can continue to go to learn about specific topics, and disease and health are two she’s most interested in “It’s very important to find places where we can get help accessing information about resources for our well-being,” she says, “as well as share beautiful moments with our community.”
Being part of Commún has been transformative for Laura and her husband. “It allows us to exchange ideas and relieve the stress we’re currently living with,” she shares. “One fellow participant summed it up best: ‘At home I grow old, and out in the world I grow young again.’”
Laura’s story is a testament to how community spaces like Commún can bring life, energy, and hope to those seeking support, and how each member adds something special to the whole.
“It’s very important to find places where we can get help accessing information about resources for our well-being, as well as share beautiful moments with our community.”
